Day 9- Holland Lake

We left Swan Lake after getting some coffee at the camp store as soon as it opened. I have not pursued my “cold coffee” strategy anymore, and just taken advantage of when hot coffee is available. Most times it is just the American drip coffee variety, which has been fine on this trip. I do look forward to our latte/espresso machine back home when done.

It was a clear, sunny day out and we could feel the sun beating down on us as we did the longer and steeper climbs. Often stopping when we had some shady spots along the way. We are still pretty lucky that we are riding in forested areas here up north, and that the outside temps haven’t gotten above the low 80° F yet. That will be different once we get further south, especially in New Mexico, and the Great Basin in Wyoming. I am taking it day by day for now..

We arrived at a campground on Holland Lake that afternoon after a 55 mile day in the saddle. It is one of the nicest lakes I have seen so far, with lots of folks swimming or on paddle boards. They had a nice hiker/biker section in the campground right next to the shore of the lake. I put up my tent and jumped in with my cycling clothes still on. They didn’t have any showers, so I figured I would get myself and some clothes cleaner (no soap used). Linda and I had travelled through that area a few years ago and there were signs everywhere stating “Save Holland Lake”. We figured it was possibly a developer wanting to take that area over with multi million vacation residences, and limit access by the public. I was glad to see that hasn’t happened yet. Lots families having fun.

Holland Lake

There was quite a gathering of bikers towards the evening. Kieran (from Ireland) who I met the first day rolled in last. I figured that he would have been way ahead of me. He said that his rack broke and the bolt sheared off inside his frame.  He also said that he has no mechanical ability. Many of us tried to help to no avail. He needed to go somewhere where someone could drill out the bolt from the frame.

Day 58- Columbus and the end

It definitely was not a very restful night, and I was glad morning light was on the horizon. I went back into the community center to get so...
