Day 3- to Elkford

Had a restful night at Elk Lake. It is a hike (or bike) in campground, but it is less than a mile away from the parking lot. Lots of families were staying there and had equipped their kids with their own backpacks, for probably their first “backpacking” trip. Lots of dogs as well with packs on. Really a nice place.

I left by 8am and headed towards Elkford. The ride was a bit harder than expected. I finally reached Elkford after a bit over 40 miles, and was ready to call it a day. There really was not much after Elkford, so it was good to place to stop. I was a bit disappointed that I was struggling so soon. I guess I just need to reset expectations on how far I could travel in a day 🙁.

There was a campground in Elkford that had a tent section and a grocery store nearby. 👍. It was still early in the day, so I had some time to kill before heading into the tent. The campground did seem to cater to folks that like loud 4x4 side-by-sides, and any loud vehicle for that matter. Even liked to play loud music in those vehicles as well. So, it isn’t just American’s that like to do that to be obnoxious, although I have to say I never have encountered anything like this. I knew I would need to bring out the earplugs to sleep.

I met another bikepacker who started the GDMBR a day before me but took a rest day in Elkford for an ailing and swollen knee. His name is Andy and he is from Capetown, South Africa. I asked if he had tried icing that, and he seemed surprised with that suggestion. Linda being a track athlete and coach swears by it. He was planning to see a doctor in Fernie about it the next day. I felt bad for him knowing he came so far, and to have this happen so soon. He did get a bag of ice from the bar nearby and give it a try.

Day 58- Columbus and the end

It definitely was not a very restful night, and I was glad morning light was on the horizon. I went back into the community center to get so...
